From a Cup of Coffee to a Community

In 2016, my husband Don and I decided to help feed lunch at the Salvation Army one Sunday. It was a simple service project to get out into the community, but it ended up being so fulfilling that I began helping regularly. I eventually became the “sidekick” to Eddy, our church coordinator, and once my boys left the house and my time freed up, I asked the cook, Kaye, if I could help serve lunch once a week.
We landed on “Taco Tuesday”. It was such a joy, and while I loved the staff, I fell deeply in love with the people we were serving.
During the winter of 2023, I began volunteering nearly full-time. I spent my days sorting through piles of donations in a building that used to be a thrift store. The building had big picture windows right along the walking path of our local homeless neighbors. As they walked by, they would see me and stop to talk. I would usually be sipping on my coffee, and eventually, they started asking where their coffee was.
So, we bought a Keurig.
I learned quickly that if you give them coffee, they will come. What started with just two or three guys hanging out soon grew into a room filled with people. We looked up and realized we had a community—a family.
Today, we have 40 or more people coming in and out throughout the day. It is a safe spot where they can be themselves and know they are loved. Most importantly, it is a place where they can rest safely, which is something they simply cannot do on the streets.
